News about the SAMA (82) AGM next June.

This is the National Association and not SAMA Wales!

Sama (82) AGM and Reunion 2005

Following on from discussions and a vote taken at the last AGM for the AGM to be held at a different venue than Twickenham and to be part of a social weekend, the AGM and Reunion Weekend has been arranged to take place in The Britannia Hotel, Coventry - 3rd to 5th June 2005.

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the Christmas Draw was successful in reaching our target of £1,000.00  proceeds of which go to our mother association SAMA (82). The excess, which we will publish after we've taken into account postage, will go to SAMA Wales A special thank you to Kev Edwards and Kev Webber for their fantastic selling techniques. Your support does you proud as day after day ticket stubs and money came into SAMA Wales. It is worth mentioning our comrades from across the bridge who supported  us and SAMA (82) in the Draw.

26th November 2004

CWM Environmental Services today donated a valuable park bench to be placed at Fitzroy in the Falkland islands. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary will take the bench down to the Falklands in early January and the Falkland Islanders will make a hard standing for it in time for March 1st 2005. Stephen Hopkins, Curly and 4 other veterans will be present to unveil the bench.

 

Mitch Green (ex Welsh Guards and CWM executive) with Curly (Extremely handsome bald bloke on left) today at the official handover .

Mitch Green 'legs', who lost his cousin Paul on the Sir Galahad, handed over the Park Bench made of recycled plastic and aluminium and guaranteed a lifetime valued at £700 to Curly who in turn will take it to Plymouth for transportation to the Falklands. Mitch who served 22 years in the army will also do a sponsored bike ride of 60 miles to raise funds for SAMA Wales. More news to follow.

Today SAMA Wales paraded for the first time in the Cardiff Remembrance Parade. We were honoured that the SAMA 82 standard carried by Graham Hurley accompanied us on our first visit to Cardiff. A small turn our by 13 members was increased by another 4 from South Atlantic Medal Holders who paraded with other associations. Some photo's are included next year we hope to increase our representation greatly as we now know what to expect! Many thanks to our band of supporters e.g. Jill, Shelley and Ion.

Happy birthday to Tim Miller, SAMA Wales's very own (well 50%) botanist in Stanley. Tim & Jan will be flying our Inaugural Flag on their flagpole tomorrow to mark Armistice Day. On behalf of the branch we wish Tim a Happy Birthday and like to thank both Tim and Jan for  their support and also to wish, Billy and David SAMA 82 pilgrims both who are staying with the 'Millers' a rewarding return.

Debs from the SAMA 82 office in Blackwood today celebrates her **th Birthday. I'm sure you will all join me in wishing her a happy birthday. perhaps in 11 years time she could come to my 40th!!!!

The following text are extracts of a press release published today to regional papers

The South Atlantic Medal Association Wales Branch (SAMA Wales), is a newly established branch of veterans of the Falklands War. Encompassing the whole of Wales they already have a membership of 360 veterans and today received a grant of £3,700 for computer equipment and related articles from the lottery-funded grants programme ‘Awards for all Wales’.

The new equipment will enable the group to provide a twice yearly newsletter and create an extensive database in order to deliver a more professional service. SAMA Wales’s Secretary, Andy Jones from Libanus, Brecon is thrilled with the award “This grant will make a huge difference in our operation. The branch is barely a year old and now we can concentrate on our preparations for the 25th anniversary in 2007. Confirmation has been received of the return of two veterans to the Falklands in January 2005. Bruce Kirkham (Atlantic Conveyer) and Peter Evans (Welsh Guards) who won their places at this years reunion in Cardiff will be returning in Jan 05. In addition Billy Baynham is returning this November for Remembrance Day. SAMA Wales will support our lads whilst on their pilgrimage.

Sunday the 17th, today is ANDY'S birthday (CURLY to his mates!) He has had a bad week, toothache, one extraction, a central heating system that didn't like the new clocks, two ill children and a trip to the pub last night that went very wrong!!! Please wish him a happy day, he says any cheques for presents, make them payable to me!!! (his wife ,Lucy.) Happy birthday Andy, much love, Elgan, Steffan and Lucy xxxx

On Sunday October the 17th the SAMA 82 Standard will be on parade at the Festival of Remembrance Pontypridd. Kenny Dawkins the Standard Bearer along with Graham Hurley, Jeff Bishop and Steve Morris will represent SAMA Wales. If any body wishes to attend please let me know ASAP.

 

6th October 2004

Curly and Neil Wilkinson today met with the First Minister for Wales the Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possible erection of a national monument dedicated to the sons of Wales who paid the ultimate price in restoring freedom and democracy to the Falkland Islands and its people.

Mr Morgan expressed his support to such an  idea and wished to be kept informed. Neil Wilkinson and Curly are currently working on a comprehensive action plan with much more information to be published soon
